UN Convention on Cybercrime: Overview & Impact

On December 24, 2024, the United Nations adopted the UN Convention Against Cybercrime, the first international criminal justice treaty to have been negotiated in more than 20 years. The Convention was adopted without a vote by the 193-member General Assembly. The U.S. expressed its concern that the Convention could be misused by some signatories to facilitate bad acts, including human rights abuses. It is also important to understand how this new Convention will dovetail with the Council of Europe Convention on Cybercrime (Budapest Convention), which 78 countries, including the U.S., have signed and ratified.

This webinar will explain the key provisions of the UN Convention Against Cybercrime, discuss how it will expand harmonization, address differences with the Budapest Convention, and note gaps and provisions of concern. Panelists include:
